About Djungarian Hamster

Djungarian Hamster (Phodopus sungorus) has several names. People also call it Siberian Dwarf or Russian Dwarf because the coat of the djungarian turns white in winter. These hamsters origin from Russia,Central Asia and Siberia. Today, they are popular as pets in Northern America and Europe because of their social habits and peacefull temperament.

The average djungarian dwarf hamster is 4-5 inches long and the male is longer than female. If we compare it to the Syrian hamster, we will realize that it’s half the size of it. In some cases, djungarian hamsters weight less during winter and more in summer time. Average weight of the female can be from 18 grams to 35 grams, while males can be from 20 grams to 50. The color of the coat can be dark or light grey, golden yellow or orange.

Buying a Djungarian Hamster

There are several tips how to buy the perfect djungarian dwarf hamster that you must follow. As you know, the average lifespan of the djungarian is 1-3 years. You must buy young hamster. Interesting Fact : In the wild, they life approx. 1 year only. When buying a hamster, take a look at its eyes and nose. It should be clear. Take a look at the coat to prove that hamster has no infections.

Housing Djungarian Hamsters

The best way to keep this pets in a tank or a cage. Before buying a cage, take a look at the bars – they should be strong and not far away from each other, otherwise the hamster will squeeze through easily. In this case, it’s much better to choose aquarium tank. Place the cage somewhere in house, not in your bedroom because hamsters are night animals and they will make some noice during the night. Keep in mind that hamsters should be protected from dogs,cats and other predators. Placing cage in direct sunlight is also not a good idea.

Djungarian Hamster Diet

You should feed your djungarian hamster with well balanced dry hamster food. Don’t forget to feed them at night too when they are most active. Get some chew sticks because the teeth of hamsters grow continuously. You should also give your hamster fresh food,nuts,seeds,vegetable. Don’t give your hamster too much lettuce – it can affect the liver function.

Djungarian Hamster Common Diseases

The inner linings of their cheek pounches are fragile. Don’t give them sharp objects. Also keep in mind that the djungarians are allergic to oils in cedar which can cause digestive and respiratory problems. Sometimes, consumption of nuts,vegetables and fruits can lead to stomach upset. If this happens,provide the dry food and plenty of water. With proper hygiene and diet, djungarian hamsters will never have health problems. Take a close look at your pet once a week to prevent any health problems.
