Also keep in mind, that some hamster species can’t live together, think about it before buying a cage for them. So let’s start…

Step 1. Choosing The Right Cage For Hamster

If you visit the local pet shop or browse websites, you will find out that there are several types of cages and in fact all of them are appropriate for hamsters: plastic cages, aquariums and wire cages. According to your taste you can choose one of them buy keep in mind the following information : for aquariums, you must make sure that there is no top, or it’s made of wire to provide proper ventilation. Remember the simple rule : the bigger cage is, the more happy your little friend will be. At least, get a cage with 350 square inches of space for your pet. You will also notice the multi-story cages in the pet shop, buying it can be a good idea for a grown up hamster, while young hamsters can fall down and hurt something.  If you choose a wire cage, just make sure that the space between wires is small enough and your hamster won’t be able to escape.

Step 2. Where To Place The Cage ?

Another important step is to find the most suitable place in the house to place the cage.  Hamsters need to be at room temperature (65-75 degrees) that’s why placing the cage in a garage, unheated room or mudroom is a bad idea. You should also keep in mind another fact : hamsters are most active at night o don’t place the cage in bedroom – they will make some noise and make you angry. For the sanitary reasons, kitchen is not the best place to put the cage with this little pet.  The most suitable place is a living room or a family room, but remember that those pets have very sensitive ears, don’t scare your little friend and place the cage near TV.

As soon as you buy a proper cage for your hamster and find a good place to put it, you must rinse it to make sure there is no residue on it. Dry the cage and add some proper substrate. Just avoid cedar and pine substrates – they may be toxic for your little friend. Add food as well as special bottle of water for hamsters. Also try to make at least one spot for hamster to hide.  Another thing that every hamster must have in the cage is an exercise wheel. Get a wheel with a solid floor, because wire wheel can hurt your hummy. Buying chew toys and tunnels is another good thing that you can do.
